Travel Insurance
Mandatory for Schengen and many work visas

Covers a medical emergency abroad, where a hospital bill is in dollars and your Indian health policy does not apply. Trip cancellation and lost baggage are the parts people buy it for, and the medical cover is the part that actually saves them.

What it will not pay for

Read this before you buy.

  • Pre-existing conditions, unless the plan explicitly covers emergencies
  • Travel against medical advice, or to get treatment abroad
  • Adventure sports and motorcycling without a specific add-on
  • Losses from your own negligence — unattended baggage is not stolen baggage
  • Anything in a country your government has advised against travelling to
How a claim works

Travel claims are won or lost on paperwork you can only collect abroad. Call the 24-hour line before you pay a foreign hospital, not after you land back.

  1. 01

    Call the assistance line first

    · immediately

From abroad, reverse-charge. They locate a network hospital and set up direct billing so you are not paying dollars upfront.

  2. 02

    Direct billing arranged

    · same day

For larger hospitals in the US and Europe the insurer settles directly. For small clinics you pay and claim, so keep every receipt and the treating doctor’s notes.

  3. 03

    Get written proof for delays

    · at the airport

Baggage delay and cancellation claims need the airline’s Property Irregularity Report or written confirmation. Nobody will give it to you a week later.

  4. 04

    Claim on return

    · 7–14 days

Submit within the window in your policy, usually 30 days. Payouts on foreign medical bills are at the exchange rate on the treatment date, not the claim date.

The common mistake

Relying on a credit-card travel policy. The medical limit is usually a tenth of what a US hospital charges for two nights, and it often excludes exactly the age group most likely to need it.
